The order of works for the windows grant

Check the attic and walls, get quotes, apply for every grant you need in one application, accept the offer within 30 days, insulate, fit the windows and doors, get the post-works BER and claim within 8 months of the offer. SEAI usually pays in 4 to 6 weeks.

Step by step

  1. Check where you stand. The Ready check, your BER Advisory Report or a pre-works BER.
  2. Get quotes from SEAI-registered contractors for the insulation and the windows.
  3. Apply once for every grant you need. Nothing is ordered or started before the offer.
  4. Accept the offer within 30 days.
  5. Insulate: the attic, then the walls.
  6. Fit the windows and doors. With solid walls and external insulation, plan the windows with the wrap.
  7. Post-works BER, with a €50 grant towards it. It has to show a Good or Very Good heat loss figure.
  8. Claim within 8 months of the offer. SEAI usually pays in 4 to 6 weeks.

Step 1 of 6

What kind of home is it?

SEAI sets the windows grant by home type.

How this is worked out

SEAI's windows and doors grant needs a Good or Very Good Heat Loss Indicator on the BER Advisory Report after the work, which SEAI says an HLI below 2.3 meets. Attic and wall insulation rated Good or Very Good on your report means you meet the standard. The grants are SEAI's fixed amounts for your home type, and the doors grant is shown for two doors. The check is a guide: a BER assessor and SEAI decide.

What goes wrong

  • Windows first, insulation never. The home fails the heat loss test after the work.
  • Work started before the offer. Grants can't be backdated.
  • The deadline. Leave time inside the months for the BER and the forms.

Questions people ask

Do the windows or the insulation go first?

The insulation. The heat loss test is done after the work, and it's the attic and walls that usually decide it.

How long do I have after the grant offer?

Accept within 30 days, then finish the work, the post-works BER and the claim within 8 months of the offer.

When is the grant paid?

Usually 4 to 6 weeks after SEAI has the signed forms.
