Getting ready, step by step
Every guide on this site.
Is your home ready for the windows grant?
Four quick taps. You see where your home stands, what has to come first and every grant on the way. Your number is only asked for at the end, if you want a price.
A semi-D with the attic done and cavity walls never filled: 1 step first, the €1,300 cavity grant, then €3,000 for the windows and up to €1,600 for two doors.
How this is worked out
SEAI's windows and doors grant needs a Good or Very Good Heat Loss Indicator on the BER Advisory Report after the work, which SEAI says an HLI below 2.3 meets. Attic and wall insulation rated Good or Very Good on your report means you meet the standard. The grants are SEAI's fixed amounts for your home type, and the doors grant is shown for two doors. The check is a guide: a BER assessor and SEAI decide.
Every question
Why does the windows grant need insulation first?
SEAI's windows and doors grant needs the home to reach a Good or Very Good Heat Loss Indicator (HLI) on the BER Advisory Report after the upgrade. SEAI says an HLI below 2.3 meets it. Attic and wall insulation rated Good or Very Good on your report means you meet the standard.
What is the heat loss indicator?
The heat a home loses for each degree between inside and out, per square metre of floor. SEAI says below 2.3 meets the windows grant rule.
How much is the windows grant?
€4,000 detached, €3,000 semi-D or end of terrace, €1,800 mid-terrace, €1,500 apartment, plus €800 a door for up to two.
Which windows count?
Replacing existing single glazed or older double glazed windows. SEAI includes roof windows and skylights.
Do I need a BER?
A post-works BER for every claim. A pre-works BER is strongly advised if the home has only one type of insulation or neither.
Can I apply for insulation and windows together?
Yes, in one application. The insulation goes in before the windows.
My walls are solid. What then?
Internal or external wall insulation first. For a semi-D the grants are €3,500 and €6,000.
I ordered windows in February. Can I still claim?
SEAI says work ordered or started since 27 January 2026 may qualify, if it meets the scheme's requirements and used a registered contractor.
Is the windows grant once-off?
Yes. SEAI says the windows grant is a once-off grant.
Does an extension count?
Extensions built before 1 January 2011 can be included. Later extensions can't.
Who gets my request?
One SEAI-registered contractor who covers your county. windowsgrant.ie is not SEAI or a government body and does not award grants.
